Wing, Horton Named Eagle Athletes of the Month

Sophomore men’s cross country runner Kevin Horton of Kingston, Mass. and freshman soccer forward Sharma Wing of Windham, Maine, have been named the Daniel Webster College Eagle “Athletes of the Month,” for September 2006 as selected by the Athlete of the Month committee.

Horton put forth an outstanding month on the cross country trails, placing as the top Eagle finisher in all three races in which the team ran.

Horton placed second overall (of 35) in the season-opening DWC Eagle Invitational on September 15th with a time of 30:03, placed 34th overall (of 204) at the Pop Crowell Invitational at Gordon College on September 23rd with a time of 29:56, and capped his month with a seventh place showing (of 67) at the Rivier College Invitational on September 29th with a time of 30:07.

Horton’s efforts helped the Eagles to a first place showing (of 8) at the DWC Invitational, a 16th place showing (of 23) at the Pop Crowell, and a third place showing (of 10) at the Rivier race.

Wing enjoyed one of the most remarkable debuts in women’s soccer history at Daniel Webster. Scoring four times in her collegiate debut in a 6-0 win over St. Joseph’s (Vt.) on September 2nd, Wing began an assault on the program all time season records for goals and points that carries into October.

Following her debut, she added the lone score in a 2-1 loss to Mitchell September 3rd, a goal and assist in a 5-5 tie with Lesley September 9th, both goals in a 3-2 loss to Morrisville State September 10th, four goals and two assists in a 9-0 shutout of Maine-Machias September 24th, the lone score in a 2-1 loss to Anna Maria September 26th, and the lone and game winning score in a 1-0 victory at Mitchell September 30th.

Wing perhaps saved her best for September 19th, however. Wing scored all five goals in the Eagles 5-2 upset of longtime crosstown nemesis Rivier College, the first win for the Eagles over the Raiders in program history, spanning nine games back to 1995.

For the month, Wing garnered 19 goals (including four game winners) and four assists for an eye-catching 42 points.

At the end of month, the squad had posted a record of 4-4-1.
