Landry And Eagles Finally Solve Newbury, 73-70

Nashua - Adam Landry (Vernon, Conn.) saved the last three of his 18 points for the moment they mattered the most, and in the process helped topple what was quickly becoming an Eagle program nemesis.

Landry coolly buried a three-pointer with just 25 seconds remaining in regulation and rookie William Kemp Harris (Suitland, Md.) pulled down a huge defensive rebound – his game high 10th of the night - with 2.7 seconds remaining as the Daniel Webster College men’s basketball team came from behind to nip Newbury College, 73-70 in a tense NECC men’s basketball matchup Tuesday night at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.

Tim Jackson (W. Henrietta, N.Y.) added 18 points and dished out six assists as the Eagles (10-6, 4-2 NECC) reached the 10-win plateau for the first time since 1998 and gained an important conference victory while maintaining a hold on third place in the league standings.

Further, the Eagles finally solved a Newbury program they had never beaten in seven previous tries (dating back to 2001) including a memorable 100-97 overtime home loss last season that was decided on a buzzer-beating 75-foot shot.

Chris Hanson (Salem, Mass.) added 16 points and five assists while Harris added seven points.

Walky Magloire (Waltham, Mass.) led the Nighthawks (5-12, 2-5 NECC) with a game high 21 points, brining him to within five of 1,000 for his career. John Rowley, Jr. (Hartford, Conn.) hit for 13 points, while Husain Abdul-Ghaffar (Springfield, Mass.) and Kevin Cleveland (Lynn, Mass.) added 10 points each as the Nighthawks dropped their fifth straight.

After trailing by seven (15-8) in the early going, Newbury took control of the tempo over much of the final 15 minutes, shooting 52-percent (16-31) and led by as many as 12 (40-28) before a Brian Inge jumper and free throw made it a 40-31 game at the break.

In the second, Newbury would lead 45-39 after a Rowley Freebie but the Eagles would follow with a 7-2 spurt including a nifty Jackson layup to tie it 47 with 13:40 remaining.

From there, the game would see four ties and three lead changes before Newbury regained momentum on a Magliore layup and a 63-57 lead with 5:34 left.

A Harris three-point play and two freebies from Jackson cut it to one and Magliore followed with a layup for a 65-62 game with 3:43 left.

Savage answered from deep to tie it with 3:07 left and the teams would trade three more leads, including a Samuel Stanford three that put Newbury ahead, 70-68 with 1:24 to go.

After Harris drew a foul and sank one, Newbury missed two quick layups and two at the line, setting up Landry’s eventual gamer.

The Eagles return to action Thursday hosting Mitchell College at 8:00 p.m. The game marks “Spirit Night” on the College campus and will feature a number of game time giveaways.
