Hanson, Inge Power Eagles Past Southern Vermont, 90-69

Nashua - Chris Hanson (Salem, Mass.) notched a game high 24 points off the bench including six three-pointers and Brian Inge (Ft. Washington, Md.) added 22 leading the Daniel Webster College men’s basketball team past longtime rival Southern Vermont College, 90-69 Tuesday night in a NECC meeting at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.

Steve Savage (Salem, N.H.) added 15 points and six rebounds, Adam Landry (Vernon, Conn.) hit for 10 points and five assists and Tim Jackson (W. Henrietta, N.Y.) added eight assists as the Eagles (12-7, 6-3 NECC) won for the third time in their last four outings and pulled to within a half game of Becker College for second place in the league standings.

Brendan Kordana led the Mountaineers (6-15, 3-7 NECC) with 20 points, while Ben Naaktgeboren (Cambridge, N.Y.) scored 11. Jaret Falkowitz (Scotia, N.Y.) and Cameron Herrington (Cambridge, N.Y.) added 10.

One of the keys to the victory was the Eagle defense successfully shutting down SVC’s Joe Karnik, who came into the game averaging 18.8 points per outing - good for second overall in the NECC – limiting him to just nine points including just 2 of 6 shooting from the field.

Another key was turnovers and in the case of the Eagles, it was the lack thereof. DWC committed just nine turnovers on the night, the second lowest total for the squad all season and their lowest output since the second game of the season back on November 19th.

Meanwhile, the Eagles made the best of what was given to them, turning 16 Mountaineer turnovers into 27 points.

Southern Vermont led by as many as seven (13-6) early after a Kordana jumper, but a Hanson layup sparked a 7-0 run including Savage hitting a nifty pull up to even things at 13.

Leading 23-22 with 7:34 to go in the first half, Inge knocked down a three, Savage added a layup and Hanson knocked down another from downtown as part of a 9-0 run. The Eagles would eventually take a 45-33 lead to the break.

Daniel Webster took control opening with a 12-6 run over the first three minutes of the second stanza, keyed by a three-pointer and three-point play from Inge as the lead would grow to as many as 18.

Southern Vermont mounted one last rally. Trailing 61-45 with 14:07 left, Falkowitz converted a layup and Naaktgeboren followed inside igniting a quick 10-2 run. A Brett Clatworthy (Argyle, N.Y.) three cut the deficit to eight (63-55) with 10:15 left.

But Hanson answered with a big three and Savage followed with a nifty move inside to regain a 13-point advantage and the Mountaineers would pull no closer than 10.

DWC would limit SVC to just six points over the final six minutes.

The Eagles return to action Thursday hosting 12th-ranked Elms College at 8:00 p.m.
