Information -
Keene, N.H. – Senior forward Nate Anderson (Westminster, Mass.), named the
tournament MVP, tied his career high with 27 points and pulled down a career
best 21 rebounds to lead Keene State to a 104-88 victory over Daniel Webster
College in the championship game of the 9th Annual Noyes Volkswagen KSC
Tip-Off Tournament at Spaulding Gym on Saturday night.
The Owls, who evened their record at 2-2, have won the tournament title
every year it’s been contested. Daniel Webster, playing KSC for the first
time since the 1999-2000 season, falls to 3-1.
Anderson hit six of his seven shots for the field for 16 points, and pulled
down eight rebounds to stake KSC to a 47-44 halftime lead. Sophomore guard
Chris Hanson (Salem, Mass.) and senior guard Brian Inge (Fort Washington,
Md.) had 12 points each for DWC.
The Owls went inside and outside to pull away from the Eagles in the second
half. Back-to-back three-pointers from the left corner by freshman forward
Derek D’Amours (Agawam, Mass.) put the Owls up 64-50. An inside bucket by
Anderson made it 66-52 with 14:20 to play. A three-pointer by freshman point
guard Tavonne Reid (Bridgeport, Conn.) from the top of the arc gave KSC its
biggest lead 18 points (73-55) with 12:51 to play.
The pesky Eagles, led by the three-point shooting by Hanson, didn’t go down
without a fight. Fouled on a drive, sophomore guard Chris Voukides (Salem,
N.H.) made two free throws to cut the Owls lead to nine points 92-83 with
3:05 to go.
Reid, who finished with a season high 16 points, scored eight of the Owls’
final 10 points to seal the win for KSC. After drawing an offensive foul, he
was fouled and sank a pair of free throws to put KSC up 96-83 with 2:21 to
play.
Senior forward Tyler Kathan (Ludlow, Vt.) also had a strong game for the
Owls, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds while D’Amours had a season
high 19 points, including four treys and freshman Steve Boudreau (North
Andover, Mass.) chipped in with 14 points. Both Kathan and Boudreau were
selected to the All-Tournament team.
KSC hit 10 of its 20 shots from behind the arc in the game and out-rebounded
the Eagles by a 46-24 margin.
Hanson scored 22 points and Inge finished with 18 points for DWC. Both were
named to the All-Tournament team.
In the consolation game, freshman guard Gerardo Vasquez (Houston, Tx.) had
19 points to lead Maine Machias to an 82-59 victory over Hampshire College.
Hampshire led 39-38 at the half, but the Clippers (4-3) outscored the Black
Sheep 44-20 in the second half.
Sophomore forward Sayer Wickham (Thetford, Vt.) had a game-high 20 points
and eight rebounds for Hampshire (4-3).
