Eagles Succumb To Harvard's Depth
- Courtesy Harvard Athletic Communications -
Cambridge, Mass. – Four players scored in double figures and nine scored at
least seven points for Harvard as the Crimson coasted past visiting Daniel
Webster College (N.H.) by a score of 94-51 in nonleague action at Lavietes
Pavilion Sunday afternoon.
Harvard improves to 6-5 with its second consecutive win while Daniel Webster
falls to 3-4 overall.
The Eagles were facing their second all time regular season NCAA Division I
opponent and second Ivy League program in as many seasons, having played
Dartmouth last year.
Despite playing just 25 minutes, Jeremy Lin filled the box score once again
for Harvard (6-5) with the junior guard recording game-highs in scoring
(16), rebounds (7), assists (5) and steals (4). Lin was 4-for-7 from the
floor and made all seven free throw attempts before exiting the game with
just under nine minutes remaining. Lin entered the game as one of just five
players in Division I to rank among the top 10 players in his conference in
scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. He also ranks among the Ivy
League’s top 10 players in field goal, 3-point and free throw percentage.
Freshman Peter Boehm added 14 points on 3-of-4 shooting from 3-point range
while Drew Housman and Max Kenyi scored 11 points apiece. Kenyi also added
four steals for a Crimson team that had 14 as a team. Doug Miller, Dan
McGeary and Peter Swiatek all had nine points while Oliver McNally added
eight and Andrew Pusar had seven. Swiatek added six rebounds, five of them
on the offensive glass, in 18 minutes and made all three of his field goal
and free throw attempts.
Daniel Webster was led by Adam Landry who scored 12 of his team-high 14
points in the first half. The Eagles turned the ball over 25 times, many of
them on offensive charges. Landry was 6-of-9 from the floor and added a pair
of steals in 23 minutes of action. Tim Jackson came off the bench to score
nine points while adding four assists.
In all, Harvard scored 36 points off the 25 Daniel Webster turnovers and the
Crimson had 19 fast break points.
DWC shot very well from the floor in the first half, flirting with the .500
mark throughout and finishing 12-for-25. However, four early turnovers set
the tone for a half that saw the Eagles turn it over 11 times with Harvard
scoring 12 off those miscues, many on uncontested layups. Seven different
Harvard players had at least five points on the opening period with the team
shooting better than 58 percent from the floor.
Harvard never trailed and led by double figures before the midway part of
the opening half. After DWC had cut the score to 45-32 with 2:16 remaining,
Harvard scored five straight to end the half.
In the second half, Harvard used a 12-4 run to build a 70-40 lead with 12:58
left and then used another big run, this time a 15-2 spurt to claim an 85-44
lead with seven minutes to play.
The Eagles get back to action next week at the Wesleyan Invitational in
Middletown, Conn. The Eagles face Anna Maria in the opening round on Friday,
January 2nd at 8:00 p.m. The consolation and championship are slated for
1:00 and 3:00 p.m. Saturday.
