Brookline, Mass. - The Newbury College men’s soccer team had their second
victory of the season today at their home field against Daniel Webster
College with a final score of 2-1.
The Nighthawks came out strong from the start, scoring the first goal just
under the 39 minute mark of the first half. The goal was scored by first
year student Bryan Maddock (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) off of a pass from
senior captain Chad D’Ancona (Wantage, NJ/High Point Regional) on a
breakaway. The goal marked Maddock’s first score of his collegiate career.
Newbury held onto a 1-0 lead at the half, and improved upon their lead
around midpoint of the second half when John Mawson (Amherst, MA/Amherst)
drilled an impressive long shot from the top of the eighteen, unassisted.
Daniel Webster answered back shortly afterwards with a goal of their own,
scored by Andre Garcia (Springfield, MA/Springfield) assisted by Parker
Condit (Newton, NJ/North Warren) and Michael Lohr (Chepachet, RI/
Ponnaganset).
Both goalies, Brian Picanco (Lowell, MA/ Lowell) from Newbury, and Craig Van
Tuyl (Buffalo, NY/Iroquois) from Daniel Webster saw their share of the
action with 13 and 12 shots on goal respectively. Picanco finished with 5
saves on the game, while Van Tuyl finished with 6.
