Goose Eggs As Eagles Tie Monks, 0-0
(Standish, Maine) – 1.05 and dropping.
Despite toughing out a 1-7-2 mark to start the 2007 campaign, the Daniel
Webster men's soccer team continues to solidify its defensive reputation,
evidenced by this afternoon's 0-0 stalemate with host Saint Joseph's
(Maine), a match in which both squads went toe to toe for two overtimes and
110 minutes with neither able to quite find the back of the net.
Despite an Eagle offense that is still working to find its groove, the team
defense continues to put forth outstanding numbers.
At this point in the 2006 season, the Eagles held just under a 5.00 goals
against average. But after keeper Craig van Tuyl (Buffalo, N.Y.) pitched his
first (and team's second) shutout of the season in Standish, the Eagles' GAA
has now dropped to numbers unseen in the last five years to just 1.05.
In fact, the match turned into a chess match of field positioning with
neither squad ever gaining much of an edge. The Monks, who moved to 2-5-3
overall, finished with slight advantages in total shots (18-10) and shots on
goal (5-2).
The Eagles, who earned their first GNAC points of the season with the tie,
head to New Haven, Connecticut this Saturday to face host Albertus Magnus
for a 1:00 p.m. start.
