Lions Nip Eagles In OT, 3-2

(Nashua) – Will Sagar’s redirection of a Chris Mathias corner kick 3:45 into overtime delivered the Emerson men’s soccer team past host Daniel Webster, 3-2 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup Tuesday afternoon.

Sagar’s game winner helped the Lions improve to 10-4-1 overall on the season as they evened their record to 3-3 in GNAC play. The loss dropped the Eagles to 1-10-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the GNAC.

Emerson built a 2-0 lead early in the second half thanks to a Mike Giles score 9:43 into the contest on an 18 yard boot off a Sagar pass, and Sam Perzanowski’s tally 3:10 into the second stanza.

But the Eagles hung tough, as Ben Goben notched his first of the season hopping on a loose ball in front of Lions keeper Nick Strauss at the 51:40 mark, and the Eagles took advantage of a lucky bounce when a Lion defender accidentally deflected an Eagle shot into the net for an own goal with 29:56 remaining in regulation.

The game was the third overtime affair of the Eagles and their first loss against two ties.

Strauss finished with four saves on the afternoon, while Eagle keeper Craig Van Tuly made eight saves.

Emerson finished with a 12-7 total shots advantage (11-5 SOG).

DWC returns to action with the third game of a four match homestand hosting Norwich Saturday at Noon.
