New London, Conn. – The Mitchell Mariners were led by junior guard Jen Iglesias (Waterbury, Conn.) who scored 31 points in their 84-74 victory over Daniel Webster College in each program's New England Collegiate Conference opener this afternoon.

The Mariners shot a red hot 48.2 % from the field and out-rebounded the Eagles by a 38-33 margin.

Daniel Webster (5-5, 0-1 NECC) was led by Alyssa Regan (Salem, N.H.) who scored 15 points, and Alycia Gervais (Windham, Conn.) chipped in 14 points in the loss.

Three players for Mitchell (2-6, 1-0 NECC) joined Iglesias in scoring double figures. Guard Brittany Smyth (Winsted, Conn.) scored 14 points, while Alix O’Neil (New London, Conn.) and Destiney Harris (Bristol, Conn.) scored 11 and 10 points respectively. Along with her 31 points, Iglesias also contributed with seven rebounds and six assists in the victory.

The home team came out on fire and jumped out to an early 25-5 lead with 11:04 left to play in the first half. The Mariners kept the pressure on throughout the first half and went into the intermission with a 48-23 lead.

Daniel Webster made two significant runs in the second half, but they could never cut the lead to less than eight points. The Mariners sealed the victory with solid shooting from the free throw line, as the team shot 87% (7-for-8) from the line in the last three minutes of play.

The Eagles return to action Tuesday as they visit Bay Path College in an NECC contest tipping off at 8:00 p.m.
