- Courtesy Elms Athletic Communications -
Chicopee, Mass. – Elms College
junior forward Amanda Brogna (Oxford, MA) finished with a game-high
22-point, 15-rebound effort and the Blazers held off a late second half
rally to earn a 60-49 win over Daniel Webster College in Saturday’s New
England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women’s basketball game at the Maguire
Center.
Elms College won its fourth straight and was victorious for the seventh time
in eight games. Daniel Webster had its four-game win streak snapped as it
fell to 10-8, 5-4 NECC.
Brogna, the NECC’s Player of the Week in each of the past two weeks, posted
a double-double for the 11th time this season as she finished 6 of 15 from
the field and 10 of 13 from the free throw line in 36 minutes.
The Blazers led 44-33 with 12:02 remaining following a jumper by Brogna, but
the Eagles answered with a 10-2 run over the next 4:02 to draw to within
46-43.
Elms College then responded with six unanswered points to build its lead to
52-43 with 3:21 left.
Although Daniel Webster pulled to within 52-47 with 2:11 remaining, Brogna
and junior guard Jess Jurkowski (Belchertown, MA) combined to drain eight
free throws over the final two minutes to seal the victory.
Freshman point guard Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, MA) added 15 points and a
team-high four assists in 39 minutes, while Jurkowski finished with nine
points, including 7 of 8 from the free throw line.
Freshman guard Amy Nelson (Cheshire, CT) scored a team-high 12 points as the
only player to reach double figures for Daniel Webster, which committed 26
turnovers and was outscored 28-10 in the paint.
The Eagles return home Tuesday to host Southern Vermont at 6:00 p.m.
