Lucky 11 As Eagles Topple Southern Vermont, 69-49

Nashua – Amy Nelson (Cheshire, Conn.) and Joyce Chagan (Boothbay Harbor, Maine) hit for 14 points each and the Daniel Webster College women’s basketball team reached the 11-win mark for the first time since 1998 as the Eagles posted a 69-49 victory over Southern Vermont College in a NECC matchup Tuesday night at Mario Vagge Gymnasium.

Vanessa Bosques (North Windham, Conn.) added 10 points and Briana DeSeignora (Medfield, Mass.) notched eight points and six rebounds as the Eagles (11-8, 6-4 NECC) won for the fifth time in their last six outings and swept the regular season series from the Mountaineers, maintaining a hold on fourth place in the league standings.

Joa Claircius (Clermont, Fla.) led Southern Vermont (5-14, 3-7 NECC) with 14 points, while Markeisha Mullen (Windsor Mill, Md.) added a double double with 11 points and 15 boards and Rachel Pannell (Detroit, Mich.) hit for 11 points and 11 boards.

The Eagles were aided by 32 Mountaineer turnovers leading to 31 points.

DWC led by eight at the break (27-19) and held an 11-point edge after a Pannell layup brought the Nighthawks within 35-24 with 16:05 left.

But DeSeignora penetrated for three straight layups sparking a 13-0 run that would consume three minutes and swell the lead to 24 (48-24).

SVC would make one small final run and whittle the lead down to 14 (62-48) with 3:05 left after a Kristen Cummings trey, but Nelson answered from deep 20 seconds later and the Eagles held the Mountaineers to one points over the final two minutes.

The Eagles return to action Thursday hosting Mitchell College at 6:00 p.m.
