Late Pequot Rally Nips Eagles in CSJ Championship, 2-1
- Positives abound as Eagles post 1-1 mark in opening weekend -

Rutland, Vt. -- The Mitchell College women's soccer team netted two goals just 1:15 apart, the second coming with just 4:33 to play, as the Pequots captured the College of Saint Joseph (Vt.) kick-off tournament with a 2-1 victory over Daniel Webster Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Sharma Wing (Windham, Maine), who was named Tournament Offensive Most Valuable Player, put the Eagles (1-1) ahead 14:09 into the contest, converting a pass from Erin Hurd (Centerville, Mass.), finding the top shelf of the net. The play began on a nifty give-and-go pass play from Rachel Schelhorn (Lebanon, Conn.).

DWC, despite finishing with a 15-9 advantage in shots on goal, could not solve Pequot goalkeeper Molly Gill the rest of the contest. Kendra Devore (Parsonsfield, Maine) stopped five Pequot shots in the first half, giving way to Sarah Mason (Mays Landing, N.J.) who registered two second half saves.

Wing had put forth one of the most impressive debuts in Eagle program history, netting four goals as the Eagles ripped host Saint Joseph, 6-0 Saturday afternoon to earn a place in Sunday's championship. Schelhorn was nearly equal to the task, adding a goal and setting up three others. Hurd added a single tally and added an assist.

The Eagles, who scored a combined eight goals as part of a one-win campaign in 2005, have equaled their win production and have nearly equaled their goal production after just two contests, something not lost on Head Coach Tom McGuinness, who begins his second season skippering the club.

"I was pleased with some of the progress we showed as a program," McGuinness said. "Obviously we are disappointed with Sunday's result, but I am confident we can continue to show improvement as a program as the season progresses."

The Eagles return to action Saturday (9/9) as they open their home schedule hosting the Lasers of Lesley College beginning at 3:00 p.m. The game will be preceded by the men's program will kicking off against Norwich in a GNAC contest beginning at Noon.
